DESCRIPTION
Spend a day discovering the wonders of lovely Lisbon, 'the white lady by the sea', as you embark on a journey of culture and historic nautical adventures, and absorbe the vibe and colours of this romantic place.
Your morning will be spent exploring the historic sites in the centre of town, whereas the afternoon will be reserved to exploring contemporary Lisbon and its futuristic sites.
Start your tour by heading towards the waterfront of Belém in the comfort of a state-of-the-art coach, where you will visit the majestic Jeronimos Monastery, with its seaside French gardens, the Tower of Belém and the ´Padrão dos Descobrimentos´: the city's tribute to the 15th and 16th centuries Portuguese maritime explorers, who "gave new worlds to the world". On doing so, please ensure that you have your camera ready to capture the fabulous sights from above of the Tagus Estuary, the city and its surrounding coast.
Still in Belém, walk across the street to sample in first-hand a 'little bit of heaven', by trying one of Lisbon's world-famous delicacies - the original Portuguese custard tart: the 'Pastel de Belém', no less. In fact, this pastry shop keeps its original recipe secret since 1837, the year when one of the monks from the neighbouring monastery decided to make them available to the general public. As such, tasting one (or a dozen) of these wonderful pastries is not just giving your senses a treat but it is also travelling back in time to a regal age, when the delicacy of taste was first and foremost, an art expression.
We will carry on our travel in time by departing from the monastery gardens and leaving Belém behind, heading towards the Castle of São Jorge ('Saint George' in English) watching us from above on one of Lisbon's seven hills.
Upon soaking in the sights over a chilled glass of local wine from yet again another one of the city's many vantage points, we will pass by the Cathedral of Sé - one of Lisbon's most ancient and well-kept landmarks - en-route towards the 'Baixa Pombalina': the downtown area.
As we descend, we'll pass by several romantic gardens and squares, most of them being the product of the genious that was the Marquis of Pombal; King Joseph I Councelour, and who was was single-handedly responsible for rebuilding the city upon the tragic and magnanimous earthquake of 1755, which renduced Lisbon to a pile of debris.
A Romanticist at heart, the Marquis vouched to transform the city into one of the most pleasant capitals of the modern age, and it's vision has indeed endured time until our days.
Lunch will then be served in the best possible way - still favouring the views over the city, you will experience the rather excellent produce of the region in a gorgeous rooftop, and also to have the chance of relaxing and to put your feet up over a glass of wine or local beer.
Upon a well-deserved rest, we will be heading towards the Parque das Nações ('the Nations Park'), which was the site where Expo '98 took place and transformed an old shipyards' area into a cutting-edge wonder of the modern age.
Once there, you will gain entrance to the Oceanario - Lisbon's aquarium and yet again, a wonder of modern engineering.
For the more adventurous, cable cars are on avail, gliding over the waterfront.
You will also have the opportunity for a bit of shopping at the nearby shopping centre, located on the central area and still by the waterfront.
At the end of the day, you will be travelling back to the city centre with your coach and where we will say 'farewell and until the next time'.
